Second Special Session

Today is Day Two of the WA State Legislature's SECOND special session in 2017. The Legislature is still deadlocked over the budget, all due to Senate Republicans’ refusal to implement needed new taxes to pay for basic education. We’ve spent some time in the past month learning about Washington’s tax structure and how our lack of a progressive taxation system harms our state’s economy and future. It’s time for our state legislators to accept the facts.

Contact your state legislators and tell them it’s time to implement a capital gains tax in Washington State.

Who to contact: find your state legislative district via this app. Call or email your Senator and both Representatives.

(If your Rep/Senator is a Democrat) Hi, my name is [name] and I’m a constituent from [address]. I want to let the [Rep/Senator] know that I support Democratic efforts to improve the tax system in Washington State. Specifically, I support a capital gains tax and other taxes on prosperous businesses and the rich, in order to fund basic education for our kids. Please do not compromise. Our kids depend on it.

(If your Rep/Senator is a Republican) Hi, my name is [name] and I’m a constituent from [address]. I want to let the [Rep/Senator] know how disappointed I am in the Senate Republicans’ failure to fund basic education for our kids. We can’t get something for nothing, and I want our community to have a solid social safety net that includes equitable funding for education—as the Washington Supreme Court found that our constitution requires. This means we must have NEW funding. We must reshape our tax system to deal with this reality. Please stop blocking the proposed capital gains tax and other taxes on prosperous businesses and the rich. Our kids depend on it.
