FULL Saturday Night Politics 6/29/19 | MSNBC Breaking News Today June 29, 2019

the presidential election we don't go through week's top stories on how they mate right shape those 493 days lots to cover this design evolves [Applause] before I introduce them if you watch the show before you know I like to kind of send good tidings to my former friend Donald Trump so for him and only for him we've built a wall yes it's the Senate politics wall it's kind of our additional guest here it's a roadmap to wrap-up and lens the week's top stories which include Kamala the ent Trump we know she can take on Biden but what about the president I say a resounding yes plus we'll talk about the joy of politics with the viewers Joy Behar also it's Trump stupid a few Democrats that debates got it and other surprisingly not so much and Pete packs a punch I'll talk to the South Bend mayor about his big night Miami and why I think he's one of three Democrats who could take down Trump but let me introduce this a blue-ribbon panel starting with my dear friend Emily Jane Fox Emily Jane Fox you are the first additional person that person to be invited back to Sendai politic oh that's a good bad thing of course your senior reporter Vanity Fair the best-selling book born Trump and as I've said but you've been the smartest millennial I've met in my life arguably a low bar because I don't like Millennials right no you're brilliant brilliant G Robinson Michael G Robinson we we've gone through the wars are morning yo you are a sage wise voice you were Pulitzer Prize winner and your column the Washington Post is must read and I also think I think I'm the second person to be invited so you guys get this a good prize award and we've got two newbies Jacqueline Alemany I'm thrilled to have you here not just because you were the captain of the Harvard basketball what's your new later the early morning news letter power up at the Washington Post is an immediate hit used to write for Huffington Post CBS News thrilled out here I love your voice well what could we let you guys Duke it out with you Tim Miller we met on John Harmons all old show with all due respect I love your voices Republican you were a few seen Republicans left bar as well yes director for Jeb Bush John McCain the RNC found the super PAC America rising that should be on guys this doesn't fighting today right let's get to the wall Kamala Lee antitrump Kamala Harris a strong stage performance shows why she could truly be the anti-trump Democrats have been waiting for you know there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bused to school every day and that little girl was me you know what does not one witness of food fight they want to know how we're gonna put food on their table I thought that food fight line really established a fudgy I absolutely it was the food fight line in which she took control of the stage unless they're ten candidates right and and three moderators and she took control of the whole thing that to me was was well not more than the bite moment but that was before the bad moment that was a moment to me she took control of the debate and show like wow she's something no no you've heard me say this all the time this is all about finding the antitrump I mean everybody's losing this and watching picturing who can take on trouble on stage her performance to me those prosecutorial chops her demeanor her song answer to me is the best thing I've seen so far as somebody I can visualize on on stage against Trump I remember sitting next to you Annika Wallace to show the day that Attorney General bar testified in front of Congress and she had that incredible performance and I remember seeing and talking with you and saying I can't wait to see her on a debate stage next to President Trump because she is going to thrive and we saw a little bit of what could be to come if she does get on that debate stage with President Trump and I think she is going to thrive this is what I thought was fantastic about it everyone had such limited time she managed in that short amount of time to both introduced herself as a person it introduced her policies and where Eric's wall well was talking about taking the baton yeah she just took it senator Harris just took the baton and and her answers were where or I felt like swallow was performative and seeing magic she was just completely authentic she was incredibly prepared and it was almost a joy to watch in 2019 when you've been watching so many things that are just soul sucking and gutting it felt like this is what we're supposed to be as a country what she has I don't compare to Trump Trump's ability when he's speaking publicly he speaks like a human being and he doesn't he's not giving a speech she has that Jacqueline where she's talking to you and that obviously comes from somebody who's been talking and having to go eye to eye with juries in entire life yeah completely and I also think what she accomplished which was so rare in politics in general is being able to seamlessly weave together her personal narrative with attacks on other candidates primarily Joe Biden and through that I think she was able to first of all shatter this notion of electability right which is I think really just a social constructs cut right through that but then also just showed that by going toe to toe with Biden she could easily I think go toe to toe with Donald Trump and and in that demonstrated that she really is the antithesis of Trump she is this forceful a next generation african-american woman who really represents every single thing that Trump is not and I think that really resonated with with people in the audience and with people with viewers last night this is just a compliment pylon but what really impressed to me last night was she demonstrated in her campaign team demonstrated but they're in this thing to win it you know some of the other people on stage felt like they might have been in there to make a point or because this sounds like a good thing to do come was in this thing to win it that line that they prepped about school busing she been working on it they did not leak it Cory Booker went after Trump last week she didn't take the bait she waited the campaign team had the image of her as a little girl about to get on the bus ready to go out on Twitter as soon as she did and then she nailed it and stuck it right to him Biden had no idea it was coming that was great execution interesting about that that moment I didn't actually think I fell in love with it before that moment I want take that moment a little bit differently Jean it's interesting I grew up as one of the kids involved busing I remember when in the early 70s my sister was a year ahead of me got bused into a very very tough mostly african-american neighborhood school really bad experience for her they sent her to private school I could scream didn't want to go to private school went to public high school which was 4,000 kids fully integrated it was a great experience but we stayed cigarette leg was just the african-americans were here the Caucasian kids were here and I guess it's G automatically gives somebody a politician with that time was dealing with the issue of busing it's not necessary integration busing and integration could be different gene in my ignorant white man talking and saying that somebody can be completely not racist in their heart at 45 years ago as a politician say well maybe that's not the right answer South Carolina during Jim Crow before the end of Jim Crow there were snow there were no buses in our town but there had been a black high school dilapidated underfunded and there was a white high school that had all the facilities in the Savannah you know a couple years year before I went to high school the schools there was integration so I went to the former white high school there were groupers I think we were certainly less than black students were less than 10% of the population there I had you know so you talk about wasters and say the other had blessed he was staying together I mean there was like a fight every day you know I did some sort of by sunlight conflict every day I but interestingly it was the white teachers that where we had that sort of different wildly different responses there were a couple of white teachers who before a couple years before had only taught white students a couple of them were great mentors and teachers to me and a couple just could not get their minds around this integration thing and we're just nasty so much for integration I'm a beginner in college my first day and meeting kids were the other core to all waspy high schools all Jewish high schools my high school was what the world looked like and it prepared me for life I remember saying myself I can't wait to play cards with them and take their money and realities but for children you're asking children to do a lot of work I mean that's the one did you God's work that that wasn't being done yet well can I tell you what I think the problem with Joe Biden's responses I think we see it very differently than older guys is very interesting it's one thing forty five years ago to have had an opinion but it's now forty five years later you should have reflected on where you were and you should get on that debate stage and explain how you have grown since then and how your perspective has shifted and be able to apologize for holding those views that today seem antiquated and perhaps prejudiced or racist and to be able to own what you did and say that was then that was the time then but here's all the ways that I have evolved and here's how I think about that problem today and if you were hurt by that I hear you I feel you I am sorry didn't seem like he had a very thoughtful response number one he still believes would he believe them you know because he believes at the time he was walking of their tightrope on the side of the righteous between you know segregation and busing and he thought he was on the right side he still thinks he's on the second thing is he used language specifically I won't get too deep in the in the weeds but he used language that to me just struck pangs because it was it was the language that the segregationist needs to use let me just tease this because it's gonna take it where I want to go to the Teflon Joe Biden's previous guests have not stuffed in the front row nor will his Kemal exchange turn Teflon to Velcro my position across the board I did not praise racist do you agree today that you were wrong to oppose blessing in America though do you agree I did not oppose what seemed in America what I opposed is busting ordered by the Department of Education he actually did opposed busing I've gone on a premise all along that people want him so bad because they think it's the best opportunity to be Trump they gonna let things slide off him the previous segregation Commons poll says have millennial eyes does this slide off him according to some of his allies elected officials that were texting me last night they think that this is a one-off that they won't be reflected in the polls next weekend he's fine everyone has a bad date a debate you know here and there just ask Tim Miller okay debater I can't yet know but I I mean I do think accountability aside it's not too much to ask of our politicians to be forward-looking there's a reason why Bernie Sanders isn't doesn't have to answer to these same questions that Joe Biden does and that is what I think is really represented in this generational gap that you're seeing these motors under a34 who are not supporting Biden who are not getting behind it who do not believe that in the premise of Biden's campaign that Trump is an aberration and that we you know we can just get him out of office and everything's going to be fine again here's the question for me on Teflon Joe I think there are two things that came up last night number one the best argument he has is electability was that dented last night because he just looked like he'd lost a little bit of a step you know he aren't really gonna be Joe Biden supporters especially african-american women who I think Kamala Harris spoke directly to that's Biden's biggest biggest but I think that's a TBD you know cuz those those people are not sweater they're not in green rooms I'm really anxious to see how that plays out how much that came through the TV but we're gonna take a break that's real special treat the joy of politics do you think that the Democratic voters are gonna turn on you for this how do you answer claims that you splintered the party and put Trump of the white house why are you against impeachment now are you gonna change your mind very so much real times girls joined by her shoulders view the most important political show on television that is of course after son had politics you're never afraid to ask the tough questions so join our group to give her impressions of the 2020 Democratic candidates Plus Trump first the women the ladies on stuff ladies cuz I said the ladies on stage and Emeric debate each had different approaches to the event and talked about how they might do against the president and Pete Absolut punch mayor people who judged joins us to break down his winning night at the debate don't go anywhere how to run when you've never done anything remotely like this before we're prepared to do it in a novel way in an original way and we want to make sure that we're writing our own playbook do you think that we should keep troops in Afghanistan I do not and I believe that we need to do it though in a responsible way where do you see your party right now it's going to be how do we think government should work and who do we think government should work for welcome back senator politics and I want to welcome a very very special guest to the group here for a treat she's the co-host of the view on ABC a show that's become essential stop for 2020 presidential candidates she's not afraid to take them on or even the president Oh Joe Biden lowlight children where are his collagen I was reading the report in the New York Times this morning I can't decide if he's a fraud or a loser lamech wins he loves the ones he can marry if you want my know he's like a mobster right a mobster you don't talk about the family outside that's right Jerry bear welcome to wearing sunglasses by the way for you guys cataracts is what so we and now everybody looks really old to me but I know cuz I can see again okay summer of 2016 we're at Dave's olive has this big party we both know trouble for years I remember you called me over you summoned me and you know can he be this bit weak because we've known him in the previous life you go what's going on I'm not getting this yeah is this really him and we didn't understand what to make of it because we knew a guy who certainly wouldn't to be in a foxhole with but it was kind of harmless goofy harmless he was pleased at his wedding for Marla because my manager at the time was friends with him or something and I got up to dance and I sat down the KGB took my film out of the camera okay so he was never harmless he was evil over that we see now at least we didn't know we didn't know it yeah one time before he was running I saw him at the a gel concert and I guess hidden so I can't picture Trudeau City and Adele was doing a specific thing and I went over to him he was sitting with Melania and I said why are you doing this you really want to be President and it seen the poll numbers I mean that's all he cares about sir and then wait I have more there's more I interviewed Melania I'm one of my HLN shows and she's a birther too you know told me that that's good we're gonna get to the wall Trump first the women female candidates had very different on stage demeanors how will they play worse Trump in election now joy we're talking earlier how comic ILDA last night as far as I'm concerned she did the women women obviously have a different challenge women striving for power than men and I think she had the perfect note versus I think Elizabeth Warren and Christine Gillibrand do not have the right note to speak to men and women watching a woman ascend to power I actually think Amy Klobuchar has the right note I want to hear from the the other side of the gender am I missing something I had I'm gonna go for it part of the show is I'm kind of a pinata so you're just right no because it's unfortunate not fair it's not fair and you know if that's a reality women in power wanting power the way it's perceived by other women and men have to go through an unfair litmus test that we're still not there yet we're still a generation away I'm sorry those are just the facts okay well maybe we start here thinking about it a different way but I understand what you're saying this is what I think is going to be really interesting to watch as we go into general election territory if in fact the president is put up against a woman I think it's gonna take a woman to beat him the only people who have succeeded in leaving the White House or leaving the campaign in a dignified way in the Trump administration have been women you think of poll picks who left him in on a nice note Nikki Haley's left in a nice note Sarah Sanders left in a nice note and it's because the president doesn't really know how to handle woman and so I think that a woman could come in and disarm him in a way that a man the right woman I've taken a lot of heat because I've said Elizabeth waters on electro I think she's a wonderful human being so you guys this thesis of mine that women unfortunately still have to present their striving for power differently the menu this is another dumb guy no you probably have a point it's unfortunate but yeah I mean look at what they did to Hillary the legs are not right her outfit is wrong but Kamala has a lot of good things about her that I don't think people can dispute I agree she has a great personality she's attractive I mean a man needs this show yeah she I think that if remember one had the stalking Hillary and the other baits I think a common law would have started Lance exactly I just think women have to check off a lot more boxes than just that that is the bottom line I agree with you on that but now that Emily I think set the table in just a really smart way in that Trump is hemorrhaging women his comments have that have accumulated over the past few years have been really damaging and even after the 2018 midterms there were a lot of studies that show that women were turned off by him and those soccer moms those moderate Republicans are drifting towards the the left I'm not sure how far left but on the flip side of that I also think you know a woman does I think there are there been other studies shown that for Elizabeth Warren for example she beat Scott Brown in that Massachusetts Senate race right there was a study that was done that Elizabeth Warren won in part due to because she was viewed as the more masculine candidate in comparison to Scott Brown whose persona was you know based on his cosmopolitan photo shoots very body image conscious and it was with Warren was viewed as the more serious men who were conscious about their bodies I don't think we should just be thrown away I do agree that women have this extra bar or these extra bars to cross and that shouldn't be the case I'm less sure about Elizabeth Warren than you are for a variety of reasons that you know in the performance in the Wednesday night debate for example she sort of disappeared toward the end because then ask any questions would she and why would she jump in she was sort of the queen of that that session she got four questions up front it was teen up for now when it's open season and the more aggressive man and stormy and you need the right woman to push back that's what that's what not what she was called to do in her session I debate Bill DeBlasio who I keep going to that he paced around Hillary and I wanted her to say get away from me so that's what is it it's a real the point that Tom O'Hara's would know how to handle that situation and would potentially for a lot of guys who are very insecure because I think she packages it the right way that's my very point that she because she's done this a long time and she's had to sway juries and I've watched my companies are run by women I watched women in power know how to handle men the right way and to me having watched that for 30 40 years and built a very big company around I see Wow I mean she blew me away all right let's move on it's Trump stupid in 1992 Clinton's famous campaign strategy was it's the economy stupid 2020 message to democratic debaters it's Trump's duper Jean you and I talked about this after the first night a few took shots but the first night It was as if Trump didn't exist I couldn't believe it what it you know what is it the Democrats want their bottom line is we have to get rid of Donald Trump he's got to get somebody who's gonna beat down so tell us I mean nobody that first night wanted to spend time talking about what to a water because all they heard was you've got to hit the issues got a hit policy that was the wrong but yes you have to you know define your programs yes you have to be forward-looking but you know as I said that they didn't frustration we are in in a moment here you know and and there's a giant task and and so you're not gonna get you know universal pre-k and universal health insurance and all this wonderful stuff unless you're gonna beat them across just to play devil's advocate here I was sitting in on a focus group with college kids on that first debate night and the consensus from them was they really enjoyed the policy discussion and that the it should be a given that everyone needs to beat Donald Trump they know what Trump's about Val they want to know what America is yearning for somebody to stand up and punch back hard and say you are assaulting our democracy you are disgrace I am NOT gonna let it happen that you need to fight a bully with another bully er I gotta take a break still ahead it's almost Miller time on Capitol Hill Democrats are calling for former Special Counsel to testify I think they could be setting themselves up we're gonna let down and maybe people judge returns to the show anyone the key moments of this week's debate I'll ask them about it and have them deliver a message directly to the president that is coming out I'm so happy you don't hear the discussion and let's get back to the wall another mulher letdown if Democrats think Muller testifying on the hill will change anything that you should think again Jean maybe I'm missing so let me just to me there have been three or four simple things that I've said we basically he tried to get corey lewandowski to fire jeff sessions he told me again to make up a story he's hearing the war i know people not read the mother report are we assuming consumers are so stupid that they have to hear it McLuhan the medium being the message the medium is a message in this case he had more impact in this nine minute oral presentation of the report than he did with the four hundred forty eight page report I think in terms of of actually getting into people's heads what the report says about obstruction of justice now it's not this is not the ultimate game changer it's not going to make the scales fall from the eyes of a majority of the American public but it but it will drive home what Mahler found in a way that the report that nobody reads it's been it's been the ether for two years and I just we are so divided now that people that have made up their mind if they want to buy that this is obstruction if they want to buy that's the reason take of the president have agreed and converse and I just don't think people have amnesia though it's it's kind of crazy and you see with Trump he's got the forty percent that are with on the forty percent that are against him and and the other people that like the economy's going great and I don't really like Trump but he's out of the news and then he does something stupid and and they're like all right I don't like Trump again and this matters in politics last night at the debate Muller mentioned zero times obstruction zero times impeachment zero times having him back out there is important to remind people about what happened it's amazing how quickly our news cycles move but the reason zero times is because those people all understand voters don't care if this now I've said many times make this part of a bigger criminal you know positioning as a criminal the Trump Criminal Investigations Emily III just did such a wimpiness to the rats that they keep waiting for the Lone Ranger to come in and solve their problems versus we know how we're gonna get the boat out and take this mother out of all I would call every single person I could possibly call every single day from now into the election and just have them remind people what a crook is yeah and how what he did to possibly influence the election and what he stole and and all the ways that he potentially tried to obstruct justice just remind people every single day from now into the election and say okay the economy may feel good to you right now but this guy is a crook and we're gonna remind you of that everything the Democrats have done a terrible job than that where is their trey gowdy you know the email scandal started because of the Benghazi guess what you might have said the Benghazi hearings were bull but but that resulted in the end of Hillary Clinton's campaign doing that I don't understand what's important because even Lindsey Graham hasn't read it now maybe if it could listen to mullahs reading maybe that would help I guess my forty's it's got to be an overall package and Nino's doing that drumbeat is Nancy Pelosi by not letting impeachment go forward and letting the drumbeat but you have enough fury they're getting stonewalled on witnesses and they don't I don't know why they don't call chris christie of corey lewandowski who are not under the blanket of his expertise but to be continued okay not my type Trump response to new accusations sexual assault by saying she's not my type and this story's going to a news cycle joy what alternative universe are we living in now this is number 19 of sexual assault we will know his history what is it I can't find a magical response of why none of this sticks to this human being people are stupid I don't know no I was gone all 14 how many are there 14 women who accused and just put pictures up every day and say is this his type is his type is this his type because every single one of them has accused him of sexual assault and he says none of them I has tried well who was this type you know Emily what is the type that he likes to rape Emily I guess my question to you is how you you've talked to a trump female voter and you say just on this alone how can you elect this man president what's the rationale is it all men do it is it people are lying or is it a subconscious thing this somehow makes when we were to tell you that not all men rape women this is an accusation of rape it's not sexual assault it is rape and this is a credible accusation and originally this poor woman came out and said it wasn't in her own description of what happened to not use that word and I respect that decision what happened was rape if her why is that what how does a woman stop the conversation in it and turn it in a different way I don't care if it matters to the Trump voters this shouldn't matter to everybody even if it doesn't matter to those women who are still voting for him we were presenting in the White House who has been accused credibly 19 times of sexual assault whether that matters to voters it's up in the air but I think is people in the media and people on the public eye we have a responsibility to keep bringing it up even if it doesn't matter not because of the Trump voters I guess it's a problem the whole thing is we should keep talking about this the way that we should keep having hearings like on Capitol Hill this should not exit out of our lexicon it shouldn't be a bigger part of our conversation about the president this is something that deeply affects all women I think that all women can relate to this in some kind of way all men should be able to relate really understand we're up against but that's because don't understand how it feels to be in an elevator and the elevator goes down to the basement instead of going up sometimes or it's late at night and you're stuck someplace so you get into a campus there are a large swath of women that voted for Donald now on this issue alone after after half a day and we stopped talking about it the news music where the White House press corps it's look it's easy to pick on the media but they have absolutely fallen down on their responsibility on this it's insane to me Jackie who was on earlier ask Sarah Sanders once if she thought that all of the women that accused Trump of sexual assault were lying and and Sanders said yes and that was but it was a one day they didn't keep asking it if some reservist doesn't get asked about the teen universe pageant girls that he was creepy with don't get asked about and when I asked White House reporters why they say well it all came out before the election and then he got elected so people don't care that's you know it shouldn't matter it's it's important making it make me break hey joy I gotta go show you Tim gene oh it's all we Jacqueline great pal my favorite pen of all time so far don't go anywhere I spoke to mayor Pete he's coming on I'm speaking to him please take your center stage north away anywhere why has that not improved over your two terms this man because I couldn't get it done honest and direct refreshing answer for a politician one of the big moments this week's debate I'm gonna ask him up next about inside my politics he's coming on why is this potentially such a big deal we have more breaking news why wouldn't we it's Tuesday in Washington the wall is the sticking point not border secure though the promise was a wall paid for by Mexico I cannot wait to keep talking about your entire business is profiting off of other people's information then your job is to keep that information safe for a party that associates itself with Christianity to say that it is okay to suggest that God would smile on the division of families at the hands of federal agents that God would condone putting children in cages has lost all claim to ever use religious language again mayor Pete had a big night at debates Thursday night I think he was one of the two winners and he stayed out of the food fight joining me welcoming back to the 2020 presidential candidate and mayor South Bend in the our mayor people who joked Pete welcome back thank you good to be with you again you know we're gonna your ear in hopes that we're gonna talk about that and and your visit to the shelter there but I want to congratulate you on the other night I felt you were so on brand and your brand I've always felt has been about decency the ultimate anti-trump from that point of view and you showed it in that clip talking about the hypocrisy of the right and the Republicans hiding behind religion you showed it by staying out of the food fight and you also showed it and this was I think your most stunning moment when you were confronted with the issues with the police and the racial tensions in South Bend you took responsibility you said I haven't fixed it yet there's more to be done how refreshing from a politician I appreciate that the reality is when you're in charge you've got to take ownership you wind up getting credit for the things that go well you also have to accept responsibility for the things that don't we've got a lot of challenges in South Bend especially as it relates to those issues I care about them we've been working on them but I'm going to accept responsibility for the moments we fall short because I'm in charge now we have a national question the president ran for this office partly based on a claim that he was gonna fix immigration look around us we see suffering greater than ever before our immigration policy is a disaster and it is a disaster being visited on the heads of the most vulnerable among us and that's what we see right around us here at Homestead now I know in homes that you got as far as the waiting room but they're not letting you guys into the shelters I don't understand how we live in a democracy and a presidential candidate and a mayor from a city is down but you're not allowed to go in how are they explaining that to you there's really no good explanation especially because it wasn't just me there were members of Congress with oversight responsibilities including the the local representative and they were not allowed access even though the law says they should you would think that a facility like this would welcome the opportunity to show their work so that you can see that they had nothing to hide and so maybe the most concerning thing is if there's a federal law saying that a member of Congress ought to be able to inspect a facility like that that law is ignored it raises a fundamental question which is what is it they don't want us to see is it the conditions of the children is it the health of the children is their abuse going on we don't know because they won't let us in there and there were all kinds of bureaucratic excuses given policies cited but fundamentally we shouldn't be here in the first place how did we get to where there are 2,700 children in what essentially amounts to a jail that is by the way being run for profit who would want to profit off the detention of children especially children many of whom have families or sponsors in the United States right now ready to take them in here Peter I want to have a conversation about race with you as a from as a baby-boomer to a millennial and obviously we saw on a stage the Kamala Biden moment and how Biden is being challenged because in the 70s his stance on busing I actually was one of those children in the early 70s going to school involved in that and is a baby boomer I understand these conversations are nuanced and to kind of lump him that somehow he's a racist and I'm finding that somehow Millennials people have not lived through it are not able to kind of see nuance and I'm curious with you as a millennial and somebody who's caught up in one of these issues now where obviously there's decisions that were not made that were incorrect and there was there was policing that was not done correctly but then somehow you get swiped with this overall racial insensitivity how do how does it / explain to Millennials that things aren't always black and white no pun intended well I think a lot of it is that there are higher expectations and that's a good thing of course the these are very complex issues but so I'm not gonna cast the first stone here what I do know is that there's a recognition especially among a young impatient generation that the status quo just won't do that it turns out taking racist policies and saying we were gonna replace it with neutral policies didn't actually get the job done when it came to bringing about racial equity in this country I mean if you have centuries of generational theft the exclusion of black Americans from housing education access to equal health that piles up and the longer the fact that some of these harms began a long time ago it doesn't make it better it makes it worse so I understand the frustration I understand the impatience even when it's sometimes coming in my direction because we just can't go on like this if we do not fix these racial inequalities in my lifetime I'm afraid they will shred the American project to pieces in my lifetime Mayor Peter I thought you had a great moment in your clothes when you talks to talk about your experience some of the experiences many experience you've had that a lot of the older older generational camp candidates don't even have and I love that spin on it talk to me why a 50 or a 60 year old voter should not be concerned with a 37 year old based on years well I think a lot of it has to do with the quality of experience that that I've had not only the the quality of governing experience being a mayor probably the level of government that is the greatest combination of responsibilities and accessibility immediate problem-solving you don't get to wave away inconvenient facts and column fake news because your community is around you when you were mayor you eat what you cook but I'm not just talking about government experience I'm talking about life experience I was the only person on the stage that night who knows what it is like to be deployed into a war by the orders of the US president and at a moment when we see the consequences of a president who seems to treat matters of war and peace like like it's some kind of game who treats our troops as profs it is imperative that we have the perspective of the seriousness of that role and I think one of the best ways you can get that perspective is to know what it means to be on the other side of a presidential order toward troops and of course I shared my own life experience the fact that politics is very personal for me is somebody whose marriage depends on a single vote margin in the US Supreme Court all of our experiences bring us to this moment and some of the best leaders in around the world right now some of them are younger than I will be when I take office it's time for that new generation to rise up because it's clear that we're not going to win or deserve to win if all we have to offer is return to so-called normal when normal failed so many people over the last really the entire time I've been alive especially in the industrial Midwest where I live mayor Pete final question and I believe you are one of the three anti Trump's out there that's what this election is all about with Senator Harris and Joe Biden I think you do have an anti-trump stance having said that and we did this the first time you were on we know that the president watches this show he tweets about it and it that gives me great pride and disgust at the same time man-to-man Trump is watching please direct a message to the president man-to-man sure mr. president children are suffering here because of you you ran on immigration you could actually do something about it the American people want bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform I know this is useful to you politically to be as much of a crisis as possible I know it's useful for you to see Americans divided around this issue but there's more unity than you think and if you want to have some good come out of your presidency if you want it to be written about you after you are gone that you redeemed yourself in some way put an end to the detention of these children mayor Pete thank you great job the other night keep up the good work we'll be watching next my final thoughts Trump in Boonton you don't get right on at the g20 the funny bromance is alive how sad that's
