>>Announcer: THIS IS CBC “HERE & NOW.” (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪)>>Ashley: THE NEXT WEATHER MAKER ON THE WAY. IT’S GOING TO BE A MESSY AND WINDY WEDNESDAY.>>I’LL BE THERE TO SUPPORT THAT NEW LEADER OF THE LIBERAL PARTY.>>I WOULD SAY TO DO THE HONOURABLE THING, STEP ASIDE.>>Anthony: AT LEAST ONE CALL FOR DWIGHT BALL TO STEP DOWN IMMEDIATELY AS THE LIBERAL PARTY PREPARES FOR A LEADERSHIP RACE OR A CORONATION?>>AFTER ARRIVAL WE WERE ABLE TO SECURE THE AREA.>>Anthony: A MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER A SECURITY THREAT AT MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY.>>>24 HOURS AFTER THE PREMIER RESIGNED HE INSISTS THAT THE SCANDALS PLAGUING HIS GOVERNMENT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS DEPARTURE. IN A SITDOWN INTERVIEW WITH “HERE & NOW” HE INSISTS IT WAS A PERSONAL DECISION, DESPITE PRESSURE FROM INSIDE OF HIS OWN CABINET AND CAUCUS TO GO. TONIGHT WE HAVE THE LATEST ON THE PREMIER’S RESIGNATION AND WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT. (♪♪♪) OBVIOUSLY STILL BIG NEWS THE DAY AFTER. QUITE A SHOW THAT WE HAD LAST NIGHT. SO WHAT’S YOUR SENSE OF WHAT THE PREMIER IS REALLY TRYING TO TELL YOU THIS AFTERNOON?>>Peter: WELL, ANTHONY, HE AVOIDED TAKING PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEPARTURE. HE INSISTS IT’S ALL ABOUT TIMING. THERE COULD BE AN ELECTION RIGHT AT SPRING BUDGET. AND THERE WAS PRESSURE FROM CABINET AND CAUCUS FOR HIM TO GO OVER HIS HANDLING OF RECENT SCANDALS. NOW HE WAS ALSO SET TO FACE A LEADERSHIP REVIEW BY THE PARTY IN JUNE. HE INSISTS THOUGH THAT HE’S NOT LEAVING NOW IN ORDER TO AVOID THE PARTY’S JUDGMENT.>>IT WAS NEVER ANYTHING THAT I WAS AFRAID OR SCARED, YOU KNOW, TO PUT MYSELF OUT THERE. THOSE ENDORSEMENTS — THOSE REVIEWS WERE NOT ANYTHING THAT I BACKED AWAY FROM.>>Peter: IN YOUR ADDRESS LAST NIGHT YOU SAID THAT AN M.H.A. NEEDS THE CONFIDENCE OF PEOPLE IN ORDER TO GOVERN. DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU HAVE LOST THE CONFIDENCE OF PEOPLE?>>NO, I DON’T AT ALL. BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH A NUMBER OF CHALLENGES. WE JUST WON A MINORITY GOVERNMENT, YOU KNOW, LESS THAN A YEAR AGO. SO IT WAS OBVIOUSLY THERE AND WE WON THE POPULAR VOTE IN THAT ELECTION. SO I HAVE NOT LOST THE CONFIDENCE OF PEOPLE IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR AND I’M GOING TO CONTINUE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS PROVINCE, JUST IN A DIFFERENT WAY.>>Peter: WE’LL HEAR MORE FROM MY INTERVIEW WITH DWIGHT BALL LATER ON IN THE SHOW. BUT WE ALSO HEARD TODAY FROM CHES CROSBIE. EVEN BEFORE WE KNOW WHO THE CANDIDATES ARE TO REPLACE DWIGHT BALL, LET ALONE WHO IS GOING TO ACTUALLY WIN THE RACE, THE P.C. LEADER IS TRYING TO ATTACH THOSE PAST SCANDALS TO THE FUTURE LEADER.>>THE NEXT LEADER, THE NEXT PREMIER OF THE LIBERAL PARTY, WILL BE BURDENED BY ALL OF THE ACCUMULATED BAGGAGE OF CORRUPTION AND INCOMPETENCE THAT THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT OF PREMIER BALL IS BURDENED BY. THAT IS NOT GOING TO BE EASY TO SHAKE.>>Anthony: OKAY, SO THIS RACE, WHOEVER THAT’S GOING TO BE, HOW IS THAT SHAPING UP?>>Peter: WE JUST HEARD FROM THE PARTY PRESIDENT LATE THIS AFTERNOON, ANTHONY AND THOUGH THEY HAVE BEEN MEETING ALL DAY TODAY THEY STILL DON’T HAVE THE RULES FIGURED OUT. WE’RE EXPECTING THOSE LATER IN THE WEEK. BUT WE’RE STARTING TO GET A SENSE OF WHO SOME OF THE CONTENDERS MIGHT BE. SO FAR NO ONE FROM INSIDE CAUCUS IS STEPPING UP. AND WE HAVE HARD NOs FROM ANDREW PARSONS AND SIOBHAN COADY AND GERRY BYRNE. AND THE TWO MAYBES THAT WE’RE HEARING AND THEY’RE WAITING FOR THE RULES, WELL, ONE IS COMING FROM PAUL ANTLE WHO LOST IN THE LAST TWO PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS AND LOST THE LEADERSHIP RACE FOR THE LIBALS TO BALL BACK IN 2013. BUT HE SAID THAT HE’S CONSIDERING IT. HE TOLD ME THIS AFTERNOON, AM I INTERESTED? ABSOLUTELY, I’M GIVING IT VERY SERIOUS CONSIDERATION. AND THEN THERE’S ANDREW FURY WHO HAS A LOT OF SUPPORT FROM INSIDE OF CAUCUS AND CABINET. HE’S ONLY SAYING THAT THIS WAS A SURPRISE TO ME, I AM INTERESTED, BUT NEED TO DISCUSS WITH MY FAMILY AND COLLEAGUES. NOW, INTERESTINGLY THOUGH BEHIND THE SCENES, FUREY HAS BEEN ORGANIZING AND DOES HAVE SOME SUPPORT FROM WITHIN THE PARTY. SO IF EITHER OF THESE TWO MEN, INTERESTINGLY, DO END UP GOING TO THE PREMIER’S CHAIR IT WOULD BE THE FIRST TIME THAT WE HAD A PREMIER WHO HAD NEVER FACED AND NEVER BEEN ELECTED INTO A POSITION.>>Anthony: IT’S DIFFERENT TIMES, RIGHT? IT ALL SEEMS NOVEL AND PLUS THERE’S THE PRICE TO GET INTO THE RACE.>>Peter: THE LAST TIME IT WAS $20,000 WAS THE ENTRY FEE TO JOIN THE LIBERAL RACE AND THAT’S WHAT THE PARTY IS WORKING OUT RIGHT NOW.>>Anthony: THEY WANT TO GET THIS DONE WITHIN 60 DAYS?>>Peter: WHICH WOULD BE INTO APRIL AND WE HEARD AGAIN TODAY FROM THE PREMIER THAT HE WANTS THE NEW LEADER TO PUT A STAMP ON THE BUDGET. AND EVEN CHES CROSBIE AGREED THAT THE NEW LEADER HAS TO HAVE A SAY ON WHAT THE BUDGET IS, AND THEY’LL HAVE TO GET IT PASSED AND WEAR WHATEVER IS IN IT.>>Anthony: AND THE HOUSE RESUMES THE WEEK AFTER THE NEXT. PETER COWAN IS LIVE HERE IN OUR “HERE & NOW” STUDIO. M.H.A.s ARE REACTING TO THE PREMIER’S RESIGNATION BUT ONLY ONE REFERRED TO IT AS, QUOTE “A BRIGHT SHINING LIGHT FOR THE LIBERAL PARTY” AND THOSE WORDS ARE FROM EDDIE JOYCE. A FORMER LIBERAL. HE WAS OUSTED IN 2018, AND HE SAYS THAT THE PREMIER’S DECISION TO STAY ON FOR EVEN A FEW MONTHS IS A MISTAKE.>>WE HAVE A BUDGET COMING UP. THERE’S GOING TO BE A MAJOR DEFICIT IN THE BUDGET. AND NOW YOU HAVE A PREMIER WHO DON’T HAVE THE SUPPORT OF HIS CABINET OR CAUCUS WHO IS GOING TO SAY WELL, I’M GOING TO GO HEADING AND OVERSEE THIS AND I’LL TRY TO GET LEADERSHIP IN APRIL WHICH IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE. IF I WAS STILL FRIENDS WITH DWIGHT BALL AND HE WAS STILL LISTENING TO ME I’D SAY, DO THE HONOURABLE THING, STEP ASIDE. YOU HAD SOME DAYS AND YOU DID SOME THINGS, AND PEOPLE WOULD UNDERSTAND, IT’S TIME TO MOVE ON.>>Anthony: MORE POLITICS LATER. BUT STAYING WITH THIS STORY AND THE FEDERAL CONNECTION, PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU ISSUED A STATEMENT TODAY ABOUT DWIGHT BALL’S DEPARTURE. HE WROTE “I THANK PREMIER BALL FOR HIS SERVICE TO NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR AND TO OUR COUNTRY. AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF HIS COMMUNITY AND A FORMER ENTREPRENEUR, HE WORKED HARD TO FOSTER SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH FOR THE PEOPLE IN HIS HOME PROVINCE AND ACROSS ATLANTIC CANADA.” SO THAT’S WHAT THE POLITICIANS HAVE TO SAY. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE IN BALL’S OWN DISTRICT? AS “HERE & NOW’S” TROY TURNER REPORTS, HE’S GETTING MORAL SUPPORT FOR HIS DECISION TO RESIGN.>>Reporter: IN THE TOWN OF DEER LAKE HE’S KNOWN AS “DWIGHT.” AND HE RETURNS THOSE FIRST-NAME ONLY GREETINGS TO MOST.>>I HOPE THAT HE CONTINUES TO STAY ON FOR THIS DISTRICT BECAUSE I LIKE THE GUY. YEAH. AND I’M ACTUALLY A CONSERVATIVE. SO THERE.>>Reporter: MOST HERE WERE SURPRISED BY THE TIMING OF HIS RESIGNATION. THEY DIDN’T SUSPECT IT LAST WEEK AS HE TALKED ABOUT HOW HIS GOVERNMENT WOULD DEAL WITH POWER RATES. BUT THE DECISION ALSO MADE SENSE.>>YOU KNOW, I WAS SURPRISED, BUT I DON’T BLAME HIM. LIKE I SAID, POLITICS IS A TOUGH GO AND HE GOT LEFT WITH A MESS. AND I THINK HE’S DONE A REALLY GOOD JOB. I MEAN, YOU KNOW, ABOUT TIME HE — YOU CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH AND THEN YOU SAY, YOU KNOW, I WASH MY HANDS AND I’VE HAD ENOUGH. THAT’S IT.>>Reporter: MORE IMPORTANT THAN BEING DEER LAKE’S MAYOR, DEAN BALL IS BROTHER FIRST. HE’S PROUD OF HIS BROTHER’S RECORD.>>THERE’S A POINT IN TIME IN EVERYBODY’S LIFE THAT, YOU KNOW, ESPECIALLY WITH GRANDCHILDREN AND KIDS THAT ARE, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION. ARE YOU SIGNING UP FOR ANOTHER FOUR YEARS OR DO YOU LEAVE NOW. AND I CERTAINLY HAVE THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR MY BROTHER. I THINK THAT HE’S DONE A FABULOUS JOB.>>Reporter: BEFORE DWIGHT BECAME THE LIBERAL PARTY LEADER, HE AND DEAN SPOKE ABOUT WHAT IT WOULD MEAN TO HIS PERSONAL LIFE.>>IT’S A LOT TO JUGGLE AND IT HAS A TOLL. IT’S NOT A FIVE-DAY-A-WEEK JOB AND NOT 40 HOURS A WEEK, IT’S SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, 365 DAYS A YEAR. AND YOU DON’T HAVE ANY 3R50EU699 PRIVATE TIME AND YOU DON’T HAVE ANY PERSONAL TIME. AND YOU CAN’T EVEN GET A VACATION.>>Reporter: THE RESIGNATION WILL BRING THE BROTHERS CLOSER, SOMETHING THAT DEAN BALL IS LOOKING FORWARD TO.>>EVERY TIME YOU TALK TO HIM HE LIGHTS UP WHEN YOU START TALKING ABOUT GRAND KIDS AND, YOU KNOW, I’VE HAD SEVERAL CONVERSATIONS WITH HIM LATELY THAT, YOU KNOW WHAT, HE’S EXCITED NOW. AND ONE CHAPTER CLOSES AND ANOTHER ONE OPENS. I RESPECT HIS DECISIONS. AND I CERTAINLY AM LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING THE BROTHER BACK TO THE WAY IT USED TO BE.>>Reporter: WHILE MOST OF THE PEOPLE THAT I TALKED TO TODAY DIDN’T WANT TO DO AN ON-CAMERA INTERVIEW, THERE WAS A COMMON THREAD AND THAT IS THAT DWIGHT BALL IS A NICE MAN DEALING WITH A VERY DIFFICULT SITUATION. THE PEOPLE OF THIS DISTRICT WILL SURELY BE WATCHING WHO’S GOING TO BE LEFT TO DEAL WITH THAT SITUATION NEXT. TROY TURNER, CBC NEWS, DEER LAKE. (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪)>>Ashley: YOU CAN SEE FROM THAT PICTURE FROM TROY THAT IT’S A BEAUTIFUL AFTERNOON FOR MOST OF US. THE TEMPERATURES DROPPED AS WELL. HERE’S WHERE WE’RE SITTING RIGHT NOW TEMPERATURE-WISE, -8° AND -10° AND COOLER THROUGH LABRADOR. AND WE’LL SAY GOODBYE TO THOSE TEMPERATURES AS OUR NEXT WEATHER MAKER IS MOVING IN AND IT’S PUSHING IN SNOW ALREADY. THAT IS GOING TO HEAD OUR WAY AND TO BE REALLY MESSY AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE DAY TOMORROW. WE’VE GOT WIND WARNINGS IN PLACE FOR MOST OF EASTERN NEWFOUNDLAND AS WELL AS SOME RAINFALL WARNINGS AND THEN A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR THE SOUTHWEST. I’LL HAVE ALL OF THOSE DETAILS AND WE’LL TIME IT OUT COMING UP. (♪♪♪)>>IT’S ONLY ABOUT THE SIZE OF A TWO LITRE CARTON OF MILK, BUT IN A COUPLE YEARS IT WILL BE LAUNCHED INTO SPACE AND IT WILL ORBIT THE EARTH. WE’LL TELL YOU WHAT IT’S FOR COMING UP.>>Anthony: WELL, A VERY STRESSFUL SITUATION FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF AT MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY THIS AFTERNOON. ONE MAN IS CUSTODY AFTER A REPORT OF A MAN ON THE CAMPUS WITH A GUN. A DOZEN POLICE VEHICLES HAVE DISPATCHED TO MUN’S ENGINEERING BUILDING AS IT WAS EVACUATED THIS AFTERNOON. POLICE SAY THAT IT’S TOO SOON TO DETERMINE IF THE MAN THAT POLICE ARE QUESTIONING WILL FACE CHARGES AND THEY DID NOT CONFIRM IF THE MAN HAD A GUN.>>A SHORT TIME AFTER ARRIVAL, WE WERE ABLE TO SECURE THE AREA AND MAKE CONTACT WITH THAT MAN. AND THE MATTER WAS BROUGHT TO A PEACEFUL RESOLUTION. THAT MAN IS IN CUSTODY RIGHT NOW AND AN INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING.>>Anthony: NOW MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY CALLED IT A STRESSFUL EXPERIENCE AND IT’S ENCOURAGING STAFF AND STUDENTS TO USE THEIR AVAILABLE COUNSELLING SERVICES IF NEEDED. ANOTHER INCIDENT INVOLVING A GUN OCCURRED OVER THE WEEKEND IN WESTERN LABRADOR. POLICE SAY THAT SOMEBODY SHOT AT A WABUSH HOME, KILLING A DOG AND ALSO DAMAGING A HOUSE. THE R.N.C. SAYS THAT THE INCIDENT HAPPENED ON SUNDAY AROUND 2:00 p.m. ON COMMERCIAL STREET. NOBODY INSIDE THE HOME WAS INJURED AND POLICE SAY THAT THE INCIDENT IS NOT BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN A RANDOM ACT.>>>THE COAST GUARD MADE A DISCOVERY DURING A FLY-OVER TO ASSESS THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY LAST MONTH’S BIG BLIZZARD. THE CREWS SPOTTED A SUNKEN BOAT. NOW IF YOU TAKE A LOOK THERE IN THE CENTRE OF YOUR SCREEN YOU CAN SEE IT. THE VESSEL WASHED OFF A SLIPWAY. AND THEY WORKED WITH THE OWNER TO RECOVER THAT VESSEL. THAT JOB TOOK SOME HEAVY EQUIPMENT. REMARKABLY, THE COAST GUARD SAYS THAT NO POLLUTION WAS LEAKED INTO THE WATER.>>Carolyn: WELL, A GATHERING IN THIS WEEK CELEBRATED THE LIFE AND WORK OF AN ARCHIVIST, LARRY DOHEY DIED OF A BRAIN HEMORRHAGE IN AUGUST. ON MONDAY HE WAS GIVEN THIS YEAR’S NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR HISTORICAL SOCIETY HERITAGE AWARD. CEC HAIRE HAS THAT STORY.>>Reporter: AS AN ACCOMPLISHED ARCHIVIST, AND WRITER AND STORYTELLER, LARRY DOHEY MADE THIS PROVINCE’S HISTORY MORE INTERESTING. BEYOND THAT, HE WAS KIND, HELPFUL, COMPASSIONATE, AND GENUINE. AND AS ONE PUT IT, HE WAS FRIENDS WITH HUNDREDS, AND KNOWN TO THOUSANDS. HIS HUSBAND IAN MARTIN ACCEPTED THE HERITAGE AWARD FROM THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY ON DOHEY’S BEHALF.>>WHEN TERRY BISHOP-STERLING NOMINATEED HIM LAST FALL, THERE WAS NO QUESTION AND EVERYBODY ON THE BOARD THOUGHT, YEP, WE DIDN’T EVEN NEED TO HAVE A DISCUSSION ABOUT IT.>>AS A MATTER OF FACT I HAVE ON LARRY’S BOOTS THAT HE GIVE ME AND I STILL WEAR HIS WATCH THAT WAS GIVEN TO ME. SO NOT JUST THOSE MATERIAL THINGS BUT, RATHER, HIS HEART IS WITH ME.>>Reporter: HIS BROTHER WAYNE SAYS THAT ALL 11 SIBLINGS ARE HONOURED THAT LARRY’S WORK AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROVINCE IS GETTING RECOGNITION.>>AT THE SAME TIME, TO BE HONEST, IT’S A GREAT HONOUR AND A GREAT TRIBUTE, BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE WISH THAT IT WASN’T REAL.>>Reporter: BROTHER-IN-LAW, SENATOR FABIAN MANNING, SAYS THAT DOHEY WAS DEVOTED TO HIS FAMILY.>>HE’D CALL HIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND CHECKING IN ON THE FAMILY. YOU KNOW, MY SON LIVES DOWN IN HARBOUR BRETON AND THEY HAD A CHRISTENING OF THEIR CHILD. AND SEVEN-HOUR DRIVE AND WHO DRIVES IN TOWN BUT LARRY. AND HE’S ALL ABOUT FAMILY.>>Reporter: DOHEY’S HUSBAND, MAY HAVE SUMMED IT UP BEST. IAN MARTIN SAID WHEN IT CAME TO DOHEY’S LOVE OF THE HISTORY, IT WAS MORE THAN HISTORY, IT WAS, QUOTE “OUR FAMILY STORY.” CEC HAIRE, CBC NEWS, ST. JOHN’S. (♪♪♪)>>I THINK THAT IT WAS A POSITIVE THING THAT HE RESIGNED. I DON’T THINK THAT HE WAS COMPETENT TO DO THE JOB ANYWAY IN THE FIRST PLACE. I THINK THEY PROVED THAT IN THE FIRST TERM WHEN THEY BASICALLY RAISED TAXES ON TOP OF TAXES. I’M HOPING THAT WITH THIS, THERE WILL BE ANOTHER ELECTION PERHAPS AND WE’LL GET SOMEBODY WHO IS COMPETENT TO DO THE JOB. (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪)>>Carolyn: WELCOME BACK TO “HERE & NOW.” IN ABOUT TWO YEARS FROM NOW THIS PROVINCE WILL BE LAUNCHING ITS OWN SATELLITE INTO SPACE. THE ST. JOHN’S COMPANY SECOR HAS TEAMED UP WITH ENGINEERING STUDENTS AT MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY TO DESIGN A SMALL SATELLITE THAT WILL OBSERVE OCEAN CONDITIONS FROM EARTH’S ORBIT. THIS AFTERNOON I MET UP WITH THREE OF THE PROJECT COLLABORATORS TO FIND OUT MORE.>>SO THIS RIGHT HERE IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE SATELLITE. AND THIS IS THE FULL SIZE OF IT. IT’S LESS THAN A FOOT LONG AND THIS WILL HAVE ESSENTIALLY EVERY SINGLE COMPONENT FOR OUR SATELLITE THAT WE’LL LAUNCH IN SPACE IN 2022. THE SAME MATERIAL, MADE OF JUST STANDARD ALUMINUM AND IT HOUSES EVERY COMPONENT OF OUR SATELLITE.>>IT’S CELLPHONE TECHNOLOGY THAT MADE THIS POSSIBLE. AND YOU THINK OF ALL OF THE THINGS THAT GET JAMMED INTO A CELLPHONE — G.P.S. TRACKER, THE RADIOS, AND ALL OF THE COMPUTERS THAT GO IN THERE AND IT’S REALLY THAT KIND OF TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS MADE THESE TYPES OF SATELLITES POSSIBLE.>>THIS WILL BE THE FIRST — EARTH SATELLITE IN THIS PROVINCE THAT WILL BE DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED BY THE PEOPLE HERE LOCAL.>>THIS SATELLITE HAS TO BE LAUNCHED FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION AND WE GOT A SLOT ON A ROCKET, WHICH IS REALLY COOL. THAT WAS GIVEN TO US BY THE CANADIAN SPACE AGENCY. THAT ROCKET WILL GO UP TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. THE ASTRONAUTS ON THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION WILL TAKE OUR SATELLITE, PUT IT IN A LAUNCHER AND IT WILL BE EJECTED OUT INTO SPACE. THIS SATELLITE IS GOING TO BE 400 KILOMETRES IN SPACE. SO THAT’S QUITE A DISTANCE FROM THE GROUND TO MEASURE THINGS ON EARTH. ITS PRIMARY PURPOSE IS TO MEASURE INFORMATION ON THE OCEAN. THINGS LIKE ICE, THINGS LIKE WAVES, THINGS THAT WILL BE IMPORTANT TO THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY HERE, FISHERIES, TRANSPORTATION. SEA ICE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND WHERE IT IS SO THAT IF A TANKER WANTS TO TRANSIT THROUGH THERE THEY HAVE NO TROUBLE. THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR SEARCH-AND-RESCUE PURPOSES AND IF THERE’S AN INCIDENT ON A RIG, FOR INSTANCE, YOU NEED TO GET PEOPLE OFF THE RIG. IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHERE THE SEA ICE IS. AND, OF COURSE, FOR FISHERIES YOU NEED TO KNOW WHERE THE ICE IS.>>A LOT OF PEOPLE DIDN’T BELIEVE THAT I SAID I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ON A SATELLITE. AND YOU LOOK UP AND YOU SEE ALL OF THE SATELLITES PASSING BY WHEN YOU’RE LOOKING AND IT’S CRAZY TO THINK THAT WE WILL BUILD ONE HERE IN THE PROVINCE AND WATCH IT ORBIT AROUND.>>IT’S A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY ALSO FOR THE STUDENTS WITH THE DIVERSE ENVIRONMENT.>>BY THE TIME THAT WE FINISH THIS AND WE START COMMUNICATING WITH THE SATELLITE WE’LL PROBABLY HAVE 100 TO 120 STUDENTS THAT HAVE WORKED ON IT. AND TO HAVE THEM EXPERIENCED SPACE SYSTEMS, VERY MARKETABLE SKILLS, I MIGHT ADD. BECAUSE A LOT OF TIMES THEY COME OUT OF UNIVERSITY AND HAD TO GET THE TRAINING. IF THEY HAVE THE TRAINING ALREADY, THAT’S HUGE.>>AND THE SPACE AGENCY, YOU SEE IT IN THE STATES AND BIG CITY CENTRES AND YOU DON’T THINK THAT IT WILL BE SOMETHING IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR AND THAT YOU EVEN HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT THAT FIELD. IT’S MIND BLOWING AND I’M FORTUNATE TO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO EVEN WORK ON THE PROJECT AND GET EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD.>>Carolyn: BENJAMIN SAYS HE HOPES TO PURSUE A CAREER IN SPACE ENGINEERING WHEN HE GRADUATES FROM MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY AND IT SEEMS THAT HE’S OFF TO A GOOD START. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO COST ABOUT HALF A MILLION DOLLARS AND IT’S JOINTLY FUNDED BY THE CANADIAN SPACE AGENCY AND THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT. (♪♪♪)>>Anthony: SO I GUESS THAT ONCE THAT SATELLITE IS BOUNCING AROUND UP THERE WE’LL HAVE TO PUT YOU ON THE FOLLOW STORY AND SEE THE REAL IMAGES THAT IT GETS.>>Ashley: IT’S COOL — I MEAN, IT DEPENDS HOW HIGH DEF IT GETS AND WHEN HE SAID THE WAVES, THAT WAS COOL, BECAUSE ANYMORE TOOLS IN MY TOOLBOX FOR FORECASTING IS REALLY GREAT.>>Anthony: SO IT’S $>>IT’S WARMER THAN IT HAS BEEN FOR LAB WEST. AND WE’LL HANG ON TO THE TEMPERATURES AND THEY’LL DROP MORE AND STAY PRETTY MUCH WHERE YOU’RE SITTING RIGHT NOW FOR LAB WEST AND THROUGH CENTRAL. OTHERWISE, DIPPING INTO THE MINUS DOUBLE DIGITS. THE WINDS WILL SHIFT FROM NORTHWESTERLIES TO SOUTHWESTERLIES FOR THE EASTERN PORTION OF THE ISLAND AND THEN BY MORNING WE’LL START TO SEE THOSE WINDS PICK UP. WE HAVE A WIND WARNING FOR WRECKHOUSE, 120 km/h. AND THEN THE WINDS PICK UP TOMORROW AFTERNOON FOR THE SOUTH COAST AS WELL AS MOST OF EASTERN NEWFOUNDLAND AND WE’RE LOOKING AT WINDS FROM 100 TO 110 km/h. AND, AGAIN, THAT’S AHEAD OF OUR NEXT SYSTEM. A NUMBER OF WARNINGS AS WELL AND BLOWING SNOW ADVISORIES ON THE WEST COAST AND WINTER STORM WARNINGS THROUGH TO BURGEO. IN THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE AREA, A SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT IS IN EFFECT FOR THE AVALON. SO LET’S TIME THIS OUT. ♪ MOVES IN AND BY EARLY MORNING FOR THE SOUTHWEST THERE’S THOSE WINDS OUT OF THE SOUTHEAST. AND THEN AS THAT SNOW WILL PRETTY MUCH MOVE ACROSS THE ISLAND AS WE HEAD INTO THE — INTO THE MORNING HOURS. AND THEN WE’LL SEE A CHANGEOVER ALONG THE SOUTH COAST. SO BY 10:00, 11:00, NOON IS WHEN WE’LL SEE A CHANGEOVER TO RAIN. THE SNOW IS HEAVY FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE MORNING. AND THEN EVENTUALLY THAT WILL CHANGE OVER TO RAIN, PRETTY MUCH FROM CENTRAL EASTWARD. YOU’LL SEE DRIZZLE THROUGH CENTRAL BUT THEN TOWARDS THE AVALON, YOU’RE GOING TO SEE A BIT HEAVIER RAINFALL THROUGH THE DAY. AND THAT’S WHEN THOSE WINDS REALLY RAMP UP. AS THAT LOW MOVES OFF, WE’LL START TO SEE THAT WRAP AROUND AGAIN WITH COLDER TEMPERATURES AND THEN SNOW WILL REDEVELOP ALONG THE WEST COAST AND CONTINUE REALLY PRETTY MUCH INTO THURSDAY AFTERNOON. SO HERE’S WHAT I’M THINKING SNOWFALL-WISE. 5-10 cm ACROSS THE BOARD AND THE MOST SNOW FOR THE SOUTHWEST, LOOKING ATA 15-25 cm. AND WITH THAT MORE THAN LIKELY GOING TO SEE THAT IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS, OTHERWISE, 10-15 cm IS A GOOD BET. AND AS FAR AS THAT — THE WINDS GO, AGAIN, INTO THE AFTERNOON. BY NOON THOSE WINDS GUST FROM 100 TO 110 km/h AND THEN CONTINUING TO FALL, BUT STILL STAYING QUITE STRONG AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE DAY ON WEDNESDAY. SO JUST QUICKLY WANT TO SHOW HOW MUCH RAINFALL IS EXPECTED. WE’RE LOOKING AT ANYWHERE FROM 20 TO AS MUCH AS 30 mm OF RAIN FOR THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE ISLAND. AND SOUTHERN HALF OF THE BURIN, RATHER AND THE AVALON. OTHERWISE, ABOUT 10 — ABOUT 5-10 mm OF RAIN. SO CERTAINLY IT WILL BE MESSY. AND I’LL HAVE THE FORECAST AND LOOK AHEAD WHEN I COME BACK. (♪♪♪)>>HE’S TAKING THE REALLY EASY WAY OUT. HE DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEMS WITH THE PIPELINE AND DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH MUSKRAT FALLS. EVERYTHING ACROSS CANADA IS ALL SHAGGED UP. AND NOW CANADA — ACROSS CANADA, AND NEWFOUNDLAND IS MORE SHAGGED UP WITH HIM. NOW HE WANTS TO RESIGN BECAUSE HE WANTS TO GO HOME AND SEE HIS FAMILY AND SPEND TIMES WITH HIS GRANDKIDS. I DON’T UNDERSTAND THAT AND I VOTED FOR HIM. (♪♪♪)>>Anthony: LET’S GET BACK TO A STORY THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT TODAY, THE IMPENDING RESIGNATION OF DWIGHT BALL. HERE’S PART OF HIS ONE-ON-ONE CONVERSATION A FEW HOURS AGO WITH CBC’S PETER COWAN.>>Peter: PREMIER, LESS THAN A YEAR AGO YOU WON THE GENERAL ELECTION, ALBEIT WITH A MINORITY. WHY LESS THAN A YEAR LATER DECIDE TO CALL IT QUITS?>>FOR ME IT WAS TAKING TIME TO REFLECT ON MY POLITICAL CAREER AND TOOK TIME OVER THE HOLIDAYS AND REALIZING THAT THE PRIORITY FOR ME WAS RATE MITIGATION. AND WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAD THAT PLAN IN PLACE. AND AFTER 10 YEARS IN POLITICS, NEARLY IN MY FIFTH YEAR AS PREMIER, I MADE A DECISION THAT IT WAS TIME FOR RENEWAL FOR ME AND I WASN’T PREPARED TO RUN IN ANOTHER ELECTION, I MADE THAT QUITE CLEAR.>>Peter: BUT WHEN YOU HAVE CABINET MINISTERS AND CAUCUS MEMBERS WHO ARE NOT HAPPY WITH YOUR LEADERSHIP — THERE WAS A LEADERSHIP REVIEW THAT GOING TO COME UP IN JUNE, HOW MUCH DID THAT PRESSURE WEIGH INTO WHAT YOU SAY IS A PERSONAL DECISION?>>THE LEADERSHIP REVIEW IS SOMETHING THAT I ALWAYS EMBRACED. I HAVE ENJOYED ORGANIZING THE PARTY FOR LEADERSHIP REVIEWS BECAUSE IT MEANS YOU’RE THEN READY FOR AN ELECTION. SO I HAVE ALWAYS EMBRACED THE LEADERSHIP REVIEWS. PART OF WHAT YOU DO AND IT’S PART OF THE PROCESS OF BEING A LEADER OF THE LIBERAL PARTY, SO YOU KNOW THAT GOING IN. IT WAS NEVER ANYTHING THAT I WAS AFRAID OR SCARED TO PUT MYSELF OUT THERE. THOSE ENDORSEMENTS, QUITE A FEW OF THEM, SO THOSE REVIEWS WERE NOT ANYTHING THAT I BACKED AWAY FROM.>>Peter: IN YOUR ADDRESS LAST NIGHT YOU SAID THAT AN M.H.A. NEEDS THE CONFIDENCE OF PEOPLE IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO GOVERN. DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU’VE LOST THE CONFIDENCE OF PEOPLE?>>NO, I DON’T AT ALL. BECAUSE RIGHT NOW WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH A NUMBER OF CHALLENGES. WE JUST WON A MINORITY GOVERNMENT, YOU KNOW, LESS THAN A YEAR AGO SO IT WAS OBVIOUSLY THERE AND WE WON THE POPULAR VOTE IN THAT ELECTION. SO I HAVE NOT LOST THE CONFIDENCE OF PEOPLE IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR AND I’M GOING TO CONTINUE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS PROVINCE. JUST IN A DIFFERENT WAY.>>Peter: WHY NOT STEP DOWN NOW AND PUT AN INTERIM LEADER IN PLACE, SOMEONE TO START THAT RENEWAL PROCESS RIGHT AWAY?>>WELL, KEEPING THAT STABILITY IN PLACE RIGHT NOW IS IMPORTANT TO ME, FOR THE BUREAUCRACY THAT YOU NEED TO ACTUALLY TRANSITION FROM ONE LEADER TO THE NEXT FOR A MATTER OF A FEW MONTHS. AND WITH THE EXPERIENCE THAT WE HAVE IN MANAGING, YOU KNOW, FROM THE PREMIER’S OFFICE IS IMPORTANT, WE’LL REACH OUT TO OUR CABINET AND OUR CAUCUS, OF COURSE AND WE ALWAYS HAVE BECAUSE IT’S A TEAMWORK APPROACH. I’LL BE THERE TO WORK WITH THE NEXT LEADER AND WITH MY CABINET COLLEAGUES AND CAUCUS COLLEAGUES RIGHT NOW AS WELL AS REACHING OUT TO OTHER PARTIES AND OTHER OPPOSITION MEMBERS, YOU KNOW, WITHIN THE PROVINCE AS WELL. SO IT’S ALL IMPORTANT AS WE NOW FACE, YOU KNOW, AND MOVE THROUGH THIS TRANSITION PERIOD.>>Peter: A COUPLE NAMES SURFACING, ANDREW FUREY IS ONE. DO YOU THINK HE’S UP FOR THE JOB?>>HE’S BEEN AROUND THE PARTY FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND IT’S UP TO ANDREW TO MAKE HIS DECISION IF HE’S INTERESTED IN DOING THIS. BUT I CAN TELL YOU RIGHT NOW THAT WITHOUT QUESTION I’LL BE THERE TO SUPPORT WHOEVER THAT LEADER IS.>>Peter: WHAT ABOUT PAUL ANTLE DO, YOU THANK HE’D DO A GOOD JOB AS PREMIER?>>SAME ANSWER, IS THAT PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO CONTRIBUTE TO NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR, AND THEY HAVE A PASSION FOR THE PLACE AND THEY WOULDN’T BE THINKING ABOUT THIS IF THEY WEREN’T INTERESTED IN THE FUTURE OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR.>>Peter: YOU STILL GOT AT LEAST A MONTH OR TWO LEFT. WHAT’S ON YOUR TO-DO LIST?>>WELL, IT’S BACK TO WORK AND DOING THE THINGS THAT PREMIERS DO. WE HAVE OUR REGULAR CAUCUS MEETINGS AND FUNCTIONS –>>Peter: ANYTHING SPECIFIC THAT YOU ARE LIKE THIS IS THE LAST TIME THAT I’LL HAVE TO INFLUENCE AN ENTIRE PROVINCE AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I GET THIS DONE?>>NO, IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR ME. I COME IN AND I DO THE ANALYSIS AND I MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON THE INFORMATION IN FRONT OF ME AND I USE MY CABINET AND COLLEAGUES AND MY CABINET SECRETARIAT THAT IS ALWAYS THERE. SO IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL. BUT WE WILL BE OBVIOUSLY USING THE SAME PROCESSES THAT WE USE IN PLACE. SO I’M NOT LOOKING AT A LIST THERE, AND SAYING THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I MUST DO BEFORE I LEAVE THIS OFFICE. I WILL DO IT ONLY WHEN IT BENEFITS NEWFOUNDLANDERS AND LABRADORIANS.>>Peter: WELL, PREMIER, THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING WITH ME TODAY.>>THANK YOU, PETER.>>Anthony: WELL, MORE REACTION NOW TO DWIGHT BALL’S DECISION TO STEP DOWN AS PREMIER. EDDIE JOYCE IS THE INDEPENDENT M.H.A. FOR HUMBER-BAY OF ISLANDS AND HE WAS A LIFE-LONG LIBERAL UNTIL BALL EJECTED HIM FROM CAUCUS AND JOYCE WON A LANDSLIDE VICTORY IN LAST YEAR’S ELECTION THAT SAW THE LIBERALS LOSE MAJORITY STATUS BY ONE SEAT. SO, MR. JOYCE, WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THE FACT THAT PREMIER BALL SAYS THAT HE’S STEPPING DOWN BUT HE’LL STAY ON AS POLITICAL BOSS FOR THE NEXT COUPLE MONTHS?>>WELL, PERSONALLY, I THINK THAT IT’S PROBLEMATIC. HERE YOU HAVE A PREMIER WHO SAYS I’M STEPPING ASIDE, BUT I’M GOING TO STAY ON AS PREMIER. HE’S GOING TO MAKE THOSE DECISIONS IF THERE’S AN EXECUTIVE APPOINTMENT, WHO WILL MAKE THAT DECISION? THE CHIEF STAFF GREG MERCER WHO HE HIMSELF SAID THAT MR. MacINTOSH WENT DOWN AND GOT THE CONTRACT AND HAD THE SAME AUTHORITY IN THIS GOVERNMENT. IT’S VERY PROBLEMATIC. AND I HAVE YET TO SEE THIS HAPPENING WHERE A PREMIER STEPS DOWN AND SAYING THAT I’LL STAY ON. WHAT IF THE LEADERSHIP GOES PAST APRIL? AND LAST TIME IT WENT OVER FOUR MONTHS SO THERE’S A POSSIBILITY THAT HE’LL STILL BE IN THAT SAME POSITION WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF HIS CABINET AND CAUCUS FOR THE NEXT 4 1/2 MONTHS, GOING INTO JULY OR AUGUST. IT’S UNHEARD OF, ACTUALLY.>>Anthony: YOU MENTIONED CABINET AND CAUCUS. YOU KNOW AND I THINK THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT HIS CABINET MINISTER, SOME OF THEM ARE BASICALLY SAYING THAT YOU HAVE TO GO, IT’S TIME TO LEAVE, DWIGHT. HOW DOES HE GOVERN WHEN HE’S LOOKING AROUND A CABINET TABLE WHERE AT LEAST HALF A DOZEN OF HIS MINISTERS CLEARLY SENT HIM A MESSAGE THEY DON’T WANT HIM AS LEADER ANYMORE?>>ACTUALLY, IT’S GOING TO BE VERY DIFFICULT TO GOVERN. WHO IS GOING TO SUFFER ARE THE PEOPLE OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR. WE HAVE A BUDGET COMING UP. THERE’S GOING TO BE A MAJOR DEFICIT IN THE BUDGET. AND NOW YOU HAVE A PREMIER WHO DON’T HAVE THE SUPPORT OF HIS CABINET OR CAUCUS AND SAYING THAT I’LL GO AND OVERSEE THIS AND I’LL TRY TO GET A LEADERSHIP IN APRIL WHICH IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE. AND THE PEOPLE OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR AND, LIKE, IF I WAS STILL FRIENDS WITH DWIGHT BALL AND HE WAS STILL LISTENING TO ME I’D SAY, DO THE HONOURABLE THING, STEP ASIDE. YOU HAD YOUR DAY AND YOU DID SOME THINGS, PEOPLE WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT IT’S TIME TO MOVE ON.>>Anthony: NOW, MR. JOYCE, THERE WAS A TIME WHEN YOU AND DWIGHT BALL WERE GOOD FRIENDS, LIBERALS ON THE WEST COAST. YOU PROBABLY KNOW HIM BETTER THAN MOST M.H.A.s. DWIGHT BALL KICKED YOU OUT AND NOW HE’S BEING KICKED OUT. IS THIS A KIND OF POLITICAL KARMA?>>FOR ME PERSONALLY, IT’S SAD. IT’S SAD. AS I LOOK BACK AT THE FRIENDSHIP WITH DWIGHT BALL AND HIS LEADERSHIP AND THE 58 DAYS ON THE ROAD AND HELPING MR. MANN TO GET ELECTED. AND BECAUSE HE FELT — YOU KNOW, AND HE TOLD ME PERSONALLY — THAT SHERRY GAMBIN-WALSH WAS GETTING WOMEN’S GROUPS TO FILL THE GALLERIES AND HE KNEW THAT I WAS RIGHT AND HE HAD THE INFORMATION. AND FOR DWIGHT BALL TO NOT STAND UP FOR SOMEONE LIKE MYSELF WHO STOOD BY HIM WHEN HE WAS IN PERSONAL TROUBLE, WHEN HE WAS IN POLITICAL TROUBLE, AND FOR THIS, IT SADDENS ME. BECAUSE I HAD ALL KINDS OF VISIONS OF US LEAVING THE POLITICAL SCENE TOGETHER AND I HELPED HIM TO BECOME PREMIER OF THE PROVINCE. SO I TAKE NO JOY IN THIS, NO JOY IN THIS WHATSOEVER. I JUST FEEL KIND OF SAD THAT THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW AND I’M NOT A VINDICTIVE OR A MEAN PERSON AND I WISH HIM ALL THE BEST. BUT I JUST WISH THAT HE HAD THE COURAGE TO NOT STAND UP, NOT FOR EDDIE JOYCE, BUT FOR WHAT WAS RIGHT. AND THIS IS A SAD DAY FOR ME AND PERSONALLY BECAUSE I WENT THROUGH A LOT WITH DWIGHT BALL. AND I STUCK BY DWIGHT BALL. AND DALE KIRBY STUCK BY DWIGHT BALL. SO IT’S A SAD DAY, BUT, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES WHEN YOU LOSE PEOPLE WHO YOU TRUSTED AND PEOPLE WHO GAVE YOU A LOT OF GOOD ADVICE, THIS IS THE KIND OF THING THAT HAPPENS SOMETIMES.>>Anthony: ALL RIGHT, EDDIE JOYCE ON THE WEST COAST. I APPRECIATE YOUR TIME THIS EVENING. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH, ANTHONY. (♪♪♪)>>TALKING ABOUT THE PREMIER, I DON’T KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT IT, BUT JUST LOOKING FROM THE OUTSIDE IT SEEMS LIKE AN EXTREMELY STRESSFUL SITUATION FOR ANYONE. (indiscernible) SO TO LEAVE AND STEP AWAY. (♪♪♪)>>BILL GREGORY WAS A VOICE IN NEWFOUNDLAND RADIO FOR ALMOST 25 YEARS. NOW HE’S COME HOME TO THE FAMILY FARM. BILL GREGORY OFF AIR, SUNDAY AT NOON AND MONDAY AT 7:00. (♪♪♪) (♪♪♪)>>Carolyn: WELCOME BACK. A MAJOR CORPORATE DONATION WAS MADE TO CANCER CARE LAST WEEK. FORTIS PUT FORWARD HALF A MILLION DOLLARS. BUT IT WAS A YOUNG CANCER PATIENT WHO DREW THE LOUDEST APPLAUSE. MEGAN WATERMAN SHARED HER STORY OF FEAR, COMPASSION, AND DETERMINATION. CEC HAIRE WAS THERE.>>Reporter: IT’S JUST ANOTHER DAY FOR 21-YEAR-OLD MEGAN WATERMAN. A MUN STUDENT AND A CANCER PATIENT, SHE’S ALSO THIS YEAR’S SHAVE FOR THE BRAVE AMBASSADOR. AND SHE’S ABOUT TO SPEAK TO MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE AND SHARE A DEEPLY PERSONAL STORY. A YEAR AND A HALF AGO BEFORE TURNING 20, WATERMAN WAS DIAGNOSED WITH OVARIAN CANCER. THE JOURNEY STARTED WITH SHOCK, AN EMERGENCY ROOM VISIT AND THE DISCOVERY OF A SOLID MASS, EMERGENCY SURGERY, AND A VERY UNEXPECTED DIAGNOSIS.>>A CANCER DIAGNOSIS AT ANY AGE IS TERRIFYING. THOUGH I DIDN’T FEEL OVERLY SCARED AT FIRST, AS A YOUNG ADULT I FELT CHEATED. I FINALLY FOUND MY PATH AND I STARTED THE PROGRAMME THAT I WORKED SO HARD TO GET ACCEPTED INTO, AND NOW I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW IF I HAD A FUTURE TO BE EXCITED ABOUT.>>Reporter: THE ROOM, DEADLY SILENT AS SHE CONTINUES HER STORY, OF THE IMMEDIATE CHEMOTHERAPY TREATMENTS AND NEWS THAT HER CANCER WAS MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN ORIGINALLY THOUGHT.>>I LEFT THAT APPOINTMENT THAT DAY AND GOT DROPPED OFF TO MY BOYFRIEND’S HOUSE. I WENT IN THERE THINKING THAT WE’D BREAK UP BECAUSE HOW IS IT FAIR TO MAKE HIM TO CONTINUE TO LOVE SOMEBODY THAT ONLY HAS A 30% CHANCE OF SURVIVAL? HOW DO YOU TELL YOUR LOVED ONES THAT? IT BROKE MY HEART EVEN MORE TO TELL MY FRIENDS AND MY FAMILY THE NEWS, BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY IT’S GOING TO BE THEM WHO WILL HAVE TO COPE WITH ME NOT BEING THERE ANYMORE. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS ALL A PART OF THE DISEASE. AND I HAD TO BE THERE FOR MY LOVED ONES JUST AS MUCH AS THEY HAD TO BE THERE FOR ME BECAUSE CANCER AFFECTS EVERYBODY.>>Reporter: AND AMID ALL OF THAT FEAR, A SIMPLE ACT OF KINDNESS — A NUGGET OF COMPASSION THAT MADE ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE.>>WHILE I WAS PROCESSING EVERYTHING THAT MY DOCTOR HAD JUST TOLD ME, A NURSE IN THE ROOM SAID TO ME, YOU’RE SO SWEET. AND THIS MIGHT SEEM LIKE A MEANINGLESS COMMENT TO SOME, BUT IT MEANS ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING TO ME. I AM NOW ABLE TO LOOK BACK AND REMEMBER THAT SOMEONE MADE ME SMILE WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT I HAD CANCER. AND I NOW HAVE A LOVING MEMORY WITHIN AN ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE ONE.>>Reporter: ANOTHER SPEECH OVER AND IT’S BACK TO TORBAY. IT’S ALL PART OF HER MISSION TO PUSH THE IMPORTANCE OF DONATIONS. HER PARENTS COULDN’T AGREE MORE.>>IT’S GREATLY APPRECIATED. AND NOT JUST BY US, BUT BY EVERYBODY, BY THE COMMUNITY. AND IT’S SOMETHING THAT SOMETIMES IT’S HARD TO PUT IN WORDS WHAT IT REALLY MEANS TO PEOPLE INDIVIDUALLY.>>I’M SO GLAD THAT WE WERE INVITED TO BE A PART OF IT. IT REALLY GAVE US A BOOST. ALL OF THE ENTHUSIASM AND GENEROSITY AND LOVE IN THE ROOM TOO. IT’S REALLY HELPED ME, IT’S BEEN A STRUGGLE. AND I’M SO GRATEFUL TO FORTIS AND EVERYONE IN THE ROOM. I JUST FEEL LIKE WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND NOW AFTER THAT ACTIVITY, YEP.>>Reporter: THE CHEMOTHERAPY IS OVER, BUT IMMUNOTHERAPY TREATMENTS CONTINUE. AND WATERMAN HOPES TO BE DONE BY THIS TIME NEXT YEAR AND UNTIL THEN SHE’S WORKING ON HER HONOURS DEGREE, TAKING IT BY TREATMENT. CEC HAIRE, CBC NEWS, ST. JOHN’S.>>Anthony: WELL, TURNING TO NATIONAL NEWS NOW, PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU CALLED FOR DIALOGUE TODAY TO END THE PROTESTS THAT HAVE SHUT DOWN THE RAIL SERVICE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. BUT THERE’S NO CLEAR SIGN OF ACTUAL DIALOGUE OR ACTION TO RESOLVE THE CRISIS. IT’S ALL SPARKED BY THE REFUSAL OF SOME HEREDITARY CHIEFS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA TO ALLOW A GAS PIPELINE TO PASS THROUGH THEIR TERRITORY. JULIE VAN DUSEN REPORTS.>>Reporter: IT’S NOW NEARLY TWO WEEKS THAT MOHAWK PROTESTERS SYMPATHETIC TO THE INDIGENOUS OPPONENTS OF A PIPELINE IN NORTHERN B.C. HAVE CONTINUED TO SHUT DOWN CANADA’S RAIL SERVICE. PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU WAS BACK IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS THIS MORNING, CALLING FOR CALM.>>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: I KNOW THAT PEOPLE’S PATIENCE IS RUNNING SHORT.>>Reporter: TRUDEAU SAYS THAT THE SHOW OF FORCE IS NOT THE WAY TO GO.>>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: AND TODAY AS PRIME MINISTER I AM ONCE AGAIN FORMALLY EXTENDING MY HAND IN PARTNERSHIP AND TRUST. [Applause]>>Reporter: CONSERVATIVE LEADER ANDREW SCHEER CALLED TRUDEAU’S RESPONSE “WEAK.” HE DEMANDED A PLAN TO DEAL WITH WHAT HE CALLED “THE RADICAL ACTIVIST,” AND END IT NOW.>>NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO HOLD OUR ECONOMY HOSTAGE, MR. SPEAKER.>>Reporter: DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE POPPED UP IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY TO SUPPORT SOME WET’SUWET’EN HEREDITARY CHIEFS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA WHO OPPOSE THE COASTAL GASLINK PIPELINE. RAIL SHUTDOWNS HAVE SEVERELY IMPACTED THE ECONOMY. CAROLYN BENNETT, THE MINISTER FOR INDIGENOUS RELATIONS, WAS IN B.C. YESTERDAY SEEKING A MEETING WITH HEREDITARY CHIEFS, BUT DIDN’T GET ONE. PERRY BELLEGARDE, THE HEAD OF THE ASSEMBLY OF FIRST NATIONS, SAYS THAT COASTAL GASLINK SHOULD GET BACK TO THE TABLE.>>THE HEREDITARY CHIEFS, YOU KNOW, TO MY UNDERSTANDING WERE PUT TO THE SIDE. AND THAT’S NOT ACCEPTABLE.>>Reporter: THIS CHIEF SAYS THAT PROTESTERS SHOULD STOP FOR NOW.>>IF YOU DO NOT CONTINUE ON WITH THE DIALOGUE OF RESPECT WITH THE HEREDITARY CHIEFS, THEN WE’LL BE BACK.>>Reporter: THERE ARE M.P.s WHO WANT TO CONTINUE DIALOGUE AND THERE ARE M.P.s WHO WANT THE POLICE TO ACT. THE PRIME MINISTER MET TODAY PRIVATELY TO CONSULT WITH ALL OPPOSITION LEADERS, EXCEPT FOR ANDREW SCHEER. SAYING THAT SCHEER’S COMMENTS HAVE DISQUALIFIED HIM. JULIE VAN DUSEN, CBC NEWS, OTTAWA.>>Anthony: A GOVERNMENT CHARTERED PLANE IS ON THE WAY TO PICK UP PASSENGERS ABOARD THAT CRUISE SHIP THAT IS QUARANTINED IN JAPAN. IT’S EXPECTED TO FLY THEM OUT ON THURSDAY AND BRING THEM TOMENTON, ONTARIO, FOR FURTHER ASSESSMENT. THE HEALTH MINISTER WAS ASKED TODAY IF THOSE EVACUEES ARE GOING TO FACE TWO ADDITIONAL WEEKS OF QUARANTINE.>>EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE WILL BE CONSIDERING THAT PARTICULAR PERSON’S HEALTH AND THE RISK OF FURTHER INFECTION. WHAT WE’RE TRYING TO DO AS A COUNTRY IS TO DO OUR GLOBAL PART IN CONTAINING THE SPREAD IN CANADA.>>Anthony: PASSENGERS WILL HAVE TO BE CLEARED OF ANY SYMPTOMS BEFORE BOARDING. THE DIAMOND PRINCESS IS THE LONGEST CONCENTRATION OF INFECTIONS OUTSIDE OF MAINLAND CHINA. AT LEAST 43 OF THE 256 CANADIANS ABOARD HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS. AND SO FAR MORE THAN 540 CASES HAVE BEEN REPORTED ON THAT SHIP. (♪♪♪)>>WHATEVER HAPPENS, THE WRONG CHOICES WERE MADE, YOU KNOW, THE SITUATION WAS CARELESS. I’M NOT SAYING THAT SHE WASN’T ABLE TO DO THE JOB, BUT THE WAY THAT THE JOB — THE WAY THAT THINGS WERE DONE — I THINK THAT IT WASN’T A PROPER WAY OF DOING THINGS. AND, YOU KNOW, THIS IS IT. I THINK THAT THE TIME HAS COME WHEN DWIGHT BALL NEEDS TO>>Anthony: FOR ANYBODY WATCHING WHO IS TAKING A FERRY — THAT IS PROBABLY EVERYBODY WATCHING — STAY TUNED. BECAUSE WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER. FIRST THE BIG STORM DENNIS WHO HAS CAUSED PROBLEMS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. IT’S THE SECOND STRONGEST BOMB CYCLONE ON RECORD IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC AND THAT’S CAUSED SEVERE FLOODING IN IRELAND AND THE UNITED KINGDOM.>>Ashley: BUT I WANT TO SHOW YOU VIDEO FROM SCOTLAND JUST A FEW DAYS AGO. LOOK AT THAT.>>Anthony: LOOK AT HOW MUCH MOVEMENT IS IN THAT AND THE CREW OF THAT FERRY IS GETTING HIGH PRAISE FOR WHAT IT MANAGED TO PULL OFF IN THE STORMY SEAS AS YOU’RE LOOKING THERE. AND THE M.V. CALEDONIAN, IT WAS DOCKING, THIS IS AT THE HARBOUR, AND YOU CAN SEE IT’S AMIDST HORRIBLE WINDS. IT MANAGED TO DOCK WITHOUT ANY DAMAGE. YOU WATCH THAT WHEN IT MAKES THAT TURN THERE — WHOA.>>Ashley: THAT IS INTENSE.>>Anthony: YEP.>>Ashley: THAT’S INTENSE.>>Anthony: PEOPLE ARE SAYING, YOU KNOW WHAT, I DON’T THINK THAT I’M GETTING ON TODAY.>>Ashley: YOU MENTIONED DENNIS AS A BOMB CYCLONE THAT. MEANS THAT THE SYSTEM RAPIDLY INTENSIFIED AND LOST 24 MILLO BARS OF PRESSURE IN 24 HOURS OR MORE. AND IN THIS CASE IT WAS MORE THAN THAT. AND IT’S RAPIDLY INTENSIFYING IS WHAT BOMB CYCLONES ARE.>>Anthony: IT SAYS IT ALL.>>Ashley: IT SOUNDS SCARY. BUT, YEAH, THAT’S IT.>>Anthony: NO BOMB CYCLONES FOR US — BUT –>>Ashley: LOOK AT OUR SHOT OUTSIDE OF THE STUDIO THERE. AND WE ARE LOOKING AT THINGS GETTING INCREASINGLY WORSE AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE DAY TOMORROW. AND HERE’S A LOOK AT THE TEMPERATURES. THIS IS WHERE WE’LL BE SITTING FOR MOST OF THE AFTERNOON. NOW SNOW TO START AND THEN TRANSITION TO RAIN, A NUMBER OF AREAS ARE SEEING THE TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS ON THE PLUS SIDE OF THE MERCURY. YOU’RE LOOKING AT A POTENTIAL OF DRIZZLE FOR CENTRAL, AND PRETTY MUCH UP THROUGH CORNER BROOK. THE REST OF YOU SHOULD STAY AS SNOW TOMORROW AFTERNOON. AND UP THROUGH LABRADOR, YOU’RE LOOKING AT TEMPERATURES MILD AS WELL, ESPECIALLY FOR THE SOUTHEAST. YOU’RE LOOKING AT HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY -5° AND MILD FOR LAB CITY AS WELL -11° WITH FLURRIES ON THE HORIZON FOR YOU. BUT, AGAIN, THOSE WINDS WILL BE STRONG TOMORROW AFTERNOON. THAT LOW IS GOING TO HEAD OFFSHORE AND THEN IN BEHIND THAT WE GET INTO THAT ON SHORE FLURRY ACTIVITY ALONG THE WEST COAST WITH A RETURN OF THOSE COLDER TEMPERATURES. YOU WILL NOTICE THAT WE’LL SEE THAT DROP IN THE TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE DAY. ANOTHER AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE WILL JUST SKIRT SOUTH OF US INTO THE EVENING. SO THURSDAY YOUR TEMPERATURES WILL DROP AGAIN. THIS IS WHERE WE’LL BE SITTING AS A DAYTIME HIGH. -16° FOR CORNER BROOK AND THOSE TEMPERATURES THAT ARE COLD WILL HEAD EAST INTO THE EVENING HOURS. ANOTHER COLD DAY FOR LAB CITY, -20° AND SIMILAR TEMPERATURES ALONG COASTAL AREAS OF LABRADOR. SO HEADING INTO THURSDAY NIGHT, A LITTLE QUIET, INTO FRIDAY, AGAIN, THAT ONSHORE FLURRY ACTIVITY POTENTIALLY WITH. SOME SUNSHINE IN THE MIX AS WELL. AS WE HEAD INTO SATURDAY, THAT RIDGE WILL SLIDE SOUTH BUT PROBABLY IT WILL BRING SOME SUNSHINE TO THE ISLAND WITH ANOTHER LOW TRACKING ACROSS LABRADOR. AND YOU’RE GOING TO SEE SOME FLURRIES WITH THAT ONE. NOT A WHOLE LOT OF WIND THOUGH. AND THEN THE NEXT RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE WILL MOVE IN AND IT WILL DOMINATE. AND IT LOOKS LIKE A QUIET COUPLE DAYS THROUGH THE WEEKEND. BY MONDAY WE’LL SEE THAT NEXT SYSTEM ROLL IN AND THAT’S GOING TO BRING SNOW WITH IT. HERE’S WHERE WE’LL SIT TEMPERATURE-WISE. 6° TOMORROW, AND THEN DROPPING AGAIN, OVERNIGHT LOWS INTO THE MINUS SINGLE DIGITS — OR, RATHER, THE MINUS DIGITS FOR THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. AND SATURDAY AND SUNDAY AT THIS POINT LOOK NICE, FINGERS CROSSED INTO THE MINUS SINGLE DIGITS AND MIGHT BE A NICE WEEKEND TO GET OUT AND TO ENJOY THAT SUNSHINE. -2° BY THE TIME THAT SUNDAY ROLLS AROUND FOR CENTRAL NEWFOUNDLAND. AND YOU’RE LOOKING AT PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING. BUT OVERNIGHT LOWS WILL DIP COOLER FOR BOTH THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. AND THEN BY SUNDAY WE SHOULD BE SITTING AROUND -1° FOR WESTERN NEWFOUNDLAND. PRETTY MUCH GREY IN THOSE ONSHORE FLURRIES BUT, AGAIN, YOUR TEMPERATURES WILL CLIMB TOWARDS THE END OF THE WEEKEND. AND THEN THROUGH EASTERN LABRADOR, SUNSHINE FOR THURSDAY AND THEN BACK INTO THAT UNSETTLED WEATHER PATTERN, BUT, AGAIN, THE TEMPERATURES CLIMBING INTO THE MINUS SINGLE DIGITS AND THAT’S WELL ABOVE SEASONAL FOR YOU FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. AND WESTERN LABRADOR, GENERALLY GREY AND SOME FLURRIES POSSIBLE, BOTH ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, WITH THE TEMPERATURES SITTING AROUND -7°. (♪♪♪)>>>WELL, I HAD TO SHARE THIS COOL PHOTO WITH YOU. TAKE A LOOK AT THAT ONE. A BIT OF A VISITOR THIS MORNING IN THAT SNOWY WEATHER.>>Anthony: THAT’S ONE OF THOSE GOOFY MIRRORS THAT GIVES YOU FUNNY-LOOKING EYES, RIGHT?>>Ashley: IT DEFINITELY LOOKS LIKE IT. I’LL TELL YOU WHERE THIS IS TO (♪♪♪)>>Anthony: ALL RIGHT, WINDING DOWN “HERE & NOW.” BUT BEFORE WE GO IT’S RICK MERCER AND ALAN DOYLE LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM BEFORE.>>I’M HERE FOR THE BOYS. THIS IS RICK MERCER, (indiscernible).>>Anthony: THERE YOU GO. SO THAT’S RICK MERCER AND ALAN DOYLE, TWO OF THE CATS RESCUED FROM LITTLE BAY ISLANDS EARLIER THIS WINTER AND THOSE FELINES HAVE BEEN RELOCATED TO HALIFAX.>>Ashley: THEY BECAME INSTANT BEST FRIENDS, SO SAYS THE TEAM AT ANIMAL RESCUE. ALAN GOT HIS NAME, SONYA SAYS, BECAUSE HE’S JUST AS BIG A LOVABLE DUDE –>>Anthony: KIND OF LIKE HE IS.>>Ashley: BUT UNLIKE THE REAL RICK AND ALAN, THIS PAIR ARE APPARENTLY VERY SHY.>>Anthony: AND IF YOU’RE WONDERING WHAT THE REAL RICK AND ALAN MADE OF THIS. AND RICK TOOK TO TWITTER, MR. MERCER DID, TO SAY THAT HE HOPES THAT HE AND ALAN REMAIN TOGETHER. WHILE ALAN PROMISES TO LET RICK USE THE LITTER FIRST. [laughter] ALL RIGHT, WELL, THERE’S AN IMAGE TO HAVE A HARD TIME GETTING OUT OF MY HEAD. A BETTER IMAGE?>>Ashley: ISN’T IT A GREAT SHOT?>>Anthony: IT’S WONDERFUL. IT LOOKS LIKE THE MOOSE IS LOOKING OVER AT THE MOOSE.>>Ashley: NOT REALLY UNDERSTANDING WHAT IS GOING ON. INDIAN BAY. YEAH, THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN ON MOCCASIN POND THIS MORNING. YES, A BIT OF A VISITOR. VALERIE MINERAL SENT THAT ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE SO I HAD TO SHARE IT WITH YOU.>>Anthony: IT LOOKS LIKE THE MOOSE IS SAYING IT’S NOT ONE OF MY BETTER DAYS. I DON’T LOOK LIKE THAT.>>Ashley: A BIT OF A MIRROR SITUATION.>>Anthony: A GREAT SHOT, VALERIE.>>Ashley: IT IS. AND IF YOU HAVE ANY TO SEND IN, SEND THEM TO [email protected]>>Anthony: TOMORROW IS
