S.E.K. Humane Society Presentation

GOOD EVENING THANKS FOR JOINING US, I’M ANDY SEARCY. A SOUTHEAST KANSAS ANIMAL SHELTER IS HOPING TO MAKE A CHANGE IN PITTSBURG’S CITY CODES. ACTION 12’S ADAM SHERWINSKI JOINS US LIVE IN THE NEWSROOM. ADAM WHAT DID COMMUNITIES AND REPEAL THE CODE THAT PROHIBIT PIT BULLS WITHIN CITY LIMITS. ADAM SHERWINSKI: AT TUESDAY NIGHT’S PITTSBURG CITY COMMISSION MEETING S.E.K.’S JASMINE KYLE PROPOSED THAT COMMISSIONERS SHOULD CONSIDER CHANGING THE CITY’S CURRENT BAN ON PIT BULLS. JASMINE KYLE SEK HUMANE SOCIETY BUSINESS & PROMOTIONS MANAGER “BREED-SPECIFC LEGISLATION DOES NOT DO ANY GOOD. IT IS NEUTRAL BREED LEGISLATION THAT MAKES IT HARD FOR HER STAFF TO GET PIT BULLS, LIKE NOVA, ADOPTED SINCE MANY ADOPTERS LIVE WITHIN PITTSBURG CITY LIMITS AND THEY CAN’T TAKE THEM TO ADOPTION EVENTS IN TOWN. JASMINE KYLE SEK HUMANE SOCIETY BUSINESS & PROMOTIONS MANAGER THE BREED DOES NOT MAKE THE DOG. IT DOESN’T. AND IT’S NOT FAIR TO THOSE DOGS.” JAY BYERS PITTSBURG DEPUTY CITY MANAGER “we certainly UNDERSTAND HER CONCERN. WE DEFFINATLY DON’T THINK IT’S FAIR TO PICK ON A PATICULAR BREED NESSCISARILY.UN LESS THE DATA COMPELS US TO MAKE THOSE KINDS OF DECISIONS. ” KYLE SAYS THAT THE DOG BREED DOESN’T DESERVE THE BAD SHAWNEE.” KYLE GAVE STATISTICS AND DATA TO CITY COMMISSIONERS DURING HER PRESENTATION. THE BAN WAS MADE YEARS AGO, BUT IT MAY BE TIME TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT THOSE CODES. JAY BYERS PITTSBURG DEPUTY CITY MANAGER “I can tell you that it’s maybe time to revisit these statistics, see if that still holds true and I think we’re willing to do that.” CITY LEADERS DID NOT SAY WHEN THEY COULD MAKE A DECISION ON THIS REQUEST, BUT THEY ARE TAKING IT UNDER CONSIDERATION. ANDY, THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME THE SEK HUMANE SOCIETY HAS APPROACHED THE PITTSBURG
